Capstar™ is the first in a new generation of flea control products from Novartis aimed at those times when a quick, effective flea kill is required, without resorting to baths, dips, sprays, or spot-on products.  The Capstar™ pill is given to the dog, cat, puppy, or kitten weighing at least 2 pounds and at least 4 weeks old, and the fleas start to die and drop off in as little as 30 minutes.  The product is eliminated by the body within 36 hours, so there is no residual effect, but in conjunction with a product like Program™, it provides an efficient way to kill adult fleas without having to deal with the chemical residues of the topical flea adulticides.  For more information, visit Novartis' Capstar™ website by clicking here.

Geriatric Products

As pets and their people love longer, healthier lives, more attention is being paid to the medical management of age-related problems in pets.  Heights Veterinary Clinic is pleased to offer the following products to help ease the discomforts of the geriatric pet:

DeramaxxDERAMAXX®

DERAMAXX® helps control chronic osteoarthritis (OA) pain in your dog. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease that affects a dog’s joints. It is the most common cause of chronic pain in dogs. The fact is, one out of five adult dogs suffers from arthritis severe enough to make it difficult for him to jump, climb stairs, even get in and out of the car. DERAMAXX is a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Nonsteroidals are medicines that control the clinical signs of inflammation, including pain, redness, warmth and swelling. Common examples of NSAIDs that people use are aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen (the active ingredients in many over-the-counter pain relievers).

Factors such as age, excess weight or congenital defects can affect your dog's joint health and his or her mobility. Poor joint health can lead to discomfort in your dog. The food your dog eats plays an important role in his or her overall health and well being, and the right nutrition can help your pet maintain healthy joints and help improve his or her mobility.

Rimadyl®
Among the first of a new generation of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Rimadyl® has proven effective in relieving the pain associated with hip dysplasia, arthritis in older dogs, and other diseases causing pain in the dog's bones, muscles, and joints.  It has also shown itself to be a safer long-term alternative than the steroidal drugs used in the past.
